C-Murder Rejected In Court, Life Sentence Over Murder Conviction Upheld

Incarcerated rapper C-Murder will continue to serve his life sentence behind bars as a Louisiana appeals court decided to uphold his murder conviction from a 2002 fatal shooting.

According to reports, C-Murder (Corey Miller) will remain in jail for life.

A three-judge panel from the state's 5th Circuit Court of Appeal on Wednesday rejected Miller's argument that he didn't get a fair trial. In 2009, a jury convicted Miller of second-degree murder for shooting 16-year-old Steve Thomas during a confrontation at a nightclub. Miller claims the judge who presided over his trial allowed jurors to hear prejudicial and unsubstantiated testimony that he threatened witnesses to the shooting. He also accused prosecutors of systematically eliminating black people from the jury. But the 5th Circuit rejected those arguments. (CBS News)

Last year, C-Murder spoke on receiving his life sentence and trying to keep upbeat.

"I'm holding up pretty good here at Angola [State prison in Louisiana]," C-Murder wrote in a letter. "I work out regularly and participate in all sports leagues. Of course I hate it, but hey, you gotta do what you gotta do. Life is short and the time you waste in jail can never be replaced. I'm asking you guys to take heed to my situation and better yourselves to live a positive and productive life." (All Hip Hop)

Former No Limit Records artist Mystikal previously discussed Murder's legal woes.

"I haven't had a chance to speak with [Master P] since I been back though," Mystikal told DJ Whoo Kid in an interview. "I ain't get a chance to holla at him yet. I hollered at C before his [case] went the way it did, you know. We gonna see if we can work on that too, I can't let him sit in there like that. He still got some breathing room, he got a little fight left in him." (Radio Planet TV)

Master P talked to SOHH in 2009 about his brother doing time behind bars.

"Your image can get you incarcerated and take a lot of things away from you," P explained. "I think he realizes that right now and he definitely will be fighting an appeal but it takes times. It might take two to three years. He's innocent from his crimes, everybody knows that but that goes to show you how your image and all the stuff from your past -- it makes others think 'Oh, you know this guy's name is C-Murder, so he's guilty.' They don't even look at, 'Oh you wasn't in the club, you didn't pull the trigger.' Man, your image can really describe your life." (SOHH)

Matisyahu Bans Fuzzy Wuzzy Beard Questions, "It's Not Like His Bald Head & New Outlook On Life Would Fly Under The Radar"

After Jewish reggae artist Matisyahu recently shocked the Internet world by shaving his trademark beard, he is reportedly banning media outlets from addressing his recent style change in his interviews.

According to the Broward Palm Beach New Times, Matis' camp specifically informed them they could not pose questions surrounding his former facial hair.

It's not like his bald head and new outlook on life would fly under the radar of his 1,374,146 Twitter followers or the vulture-like entertainment media. So naturally, in anticipation of his upcoming show, County Grind was eager to ask the artist about his recent change of philosophy. Instead, we got an email from Matisyahu's management saying that although we were approved for an interview, the rapper was "NOT answering any question[s] about his recent decision to shave, or his change in religious status." Okay. (Kind of like when Erykah Badu's people nixed any "Window Seat" video talk.) To make matters more questionable, the responses we received from Matisyahu -- the interview was done via email as the singer was "on vocal rest" -- were, in a word, curt. A couple weeks ago, Matis issued a statement describing his new look.

The veteran reggae artist's new appearance hit the Internet on December 13th.

Orthodox Jew rapper Matisyahu took a razor blade to the face this week ... and shaved off his trademark beard ... or so it seems. Matisyahu just posted the shorn pics of himself on his Twitter page ... along with the message, "At the break of day I look for you at sunrise ... When the tide comes in I lose my disguise." (TMZ)

Last week, Matis released an open apology after attacking a female journalist at a Brooklyn concert.

Gucci Mane Bids Final Slim Dunkin Farewell, Waka Flocka Flame No-Shows

Controversial rapper Gucci Mane reportedly paid his respects to slain rapper Slim Dunkin yesterday (December 28) at his funeral in their Atlanta hometown.

 

Details on the funeral gathering have begun circulating online.

Rapper Gucci Mane attended the lavish funeral for fellow Brick Squad Monopoly rapper Slim Dunkin on Wednesday in Atlanta and RumorFix has the exclusive details. The body of the 24-year-old rapper, who was reportedly murdered over a Jolly Rancher candy, was heralded with trumpets and carried by pallbearers wearing coat and tails with top hats. White flowers that spelled out the word "Squad" were laid on his casket during the services that featured several gospel songs. While Gucci paid his respects to the up and coming rapper, surprisingly Slim's buddy, Waka Flocka Flame, was nowhere in sight. (RumorFix)

Although Waka Flocka Flame did not attend the homegoing, he and Gucci covered Dunkin's funeral costs.

Waka Flocka Flame and Gucci Mane are throwing down big $$$ to cover funeral expenses for a fellow Atlanta rapper -- who was brutally gunned down last week -- lavishing their fallen comrade with elaborate memorial arrangements. Rapper Slim Dunkin (center) -- real name Mario Hamilton -- was shot and killed Friday night inside an Atlanta recording studio ... after a verbal altercation with an unidentified man turned deadly. Now, a rep for Waka and Gucci tells TMZ, the rappers are pooling their assets to ensure Slim is laid to rest in the best way possible ... with an elaborate funeral that includes a white horse-drawn carriage, massive white floral arrangements, and a white dove release ceremony. We're told Slim's family will cover some funeral costs -- but Waka and Gucci are paying for the lion's share. The funeral is scheduled to take place Friday morning at 11am at Berean Christian Church in Atlanta. (TMZ)

Following Dunkin's passing, an emotional Waka publicly expressed his sorrow.

A few days ago, suspected killer Vinson "Young Vito" Hardimon surrendered to police.

A man charged with killing an Atlanta rapper at a recording studio has turned himself in to police. Vinson Hardimon, known as rapper Young Vito, surrendered to Atlanta police Monday afternoon. He was handcuffed and taken to the Fulton County jail. Police say the 28-year-old shot and killed 24-year-old Mario Hamilton, known as rapper Slim Dunkin, on Dec. 16 at an Atlanta recording studio. Detective David Quinn says police still need more information in the case. Quinn says Hardimon's attorney called police and said Hardimon wanted to surrender. (CBS News)

"I Don't Want To Be A Babysitter & Have To Tell Another Grown Man What To Do"

With the transition of rap stars like Jay-Z and Rick Ross as CEOs of their own record labels, SOHH previously hit up Houston rapper Paul Wall to find out if he would ever add an executive role to his resume. 

Admitting the thought has crossed his mind, Paul stated that realizing the amount of responsibility a label exec has to take on killed the idea from blossoming.

"I thought about it man, but it seems like CEOs, A&Rs and managers are kind of like babysitters and I would hate to have that responsibility," Paul told SOHH when asked about considering an executive career. "[Because] for one, to hold another person's career [in my hands], I don't want to steer somebody in the wrong direction. I don't want to f*ck up their career. I see how it is with most artists. With most artists, you have to babysit them. So I don't want to be a babysitter and have to tell another grown man what to do." (SOHH)

Wall also imagined the never-ending expectations artists would have for him.

"A lot of times with artists, it seems like if you're a CEO or manager and you put your all into somebody, a lot of artists appreciate the hard work you do," Paul added. "They feel like whatever you do, they feel like they expect it and you owe it to them. No matter how much money you spend on them, as soon as you stop spending money, they ain't f*cking with you anymore and I just don't want to get into that. A lot of times you show love and you show love on a regular basis and they just start expecting it and thinking that they deserve it and that you owe them and the love you're giving them. If I did [do the executive thing], it would only be for my own music, me and my friends or if I was really trying to help somebody out. But it's too much of a time investment and too much to ask for. Recently, Jay-Z admitted being the Roc Nation CEO is similar to looking after children.

The Roc Nation CEO's answer came in response to criticism that he could have done more to endorse J. Cole, who dropped his debut, Cole Word: The Sideline Story, in September. In August, super producer No I.D. transitioned from beatmaker to Def Jam's Vice President.

Drake Fan Relives Unexpected Karaoke Surprise, "[He] Jumps Up W/ His Bodyguard Behind Him"

After footage of a karaoke singer getting surprised by Young Money star Drake making a surprise cameo during her performance hit the Internet this week, the viral star has come forward to relive the experience.

According to international Kuwait student Dalal a.k.a. Dee, she had no idea Drizzy was at the Saddle Ranch Los Angeles venue.

"I was up there with the mike and the first beats of 'Only Girl in the World' started playing and I said, 'Stop the song! Does anyone here know how to do the Drake part of "What's My Name"?' So I was like, anyone? Anyone? Hello? And decided to just sing it by myself and then boom! Drake jumps up with his bodyguard behind him and was like 'Wait, I thought I was going to do the song with you'" Can you believe it?! Neither can we. "I was like, 'Oh my god, Drake!" Dee tells E! News that, "I just got lost in the moment and thought, 'Whatever happens I don't care.' It was a total Hollywood moment." It seems like the two quickly became friends. After sharing the stage, Dee hung out with the rapper. "I went over to his table and Drake told his bodyguard to let me through. He hugged me and I thanked him for singing with me and told him that it made my day." (E! News)

YouTube footage of the karaoke performance hit the Internet Wednesday (December 28).

Drake was at the right place at the right time to help a fellow karaoker in need. While eating his meal at the Saddle Ranch restaurant in downtown Los Angeles, he decided to help a female fan sing Rihanna's hit single, 'What's My Name?' The best part? A fellow patron was on hand to catch the performance on video. In the clip, the fan (named "Dee") was singing the "Na-Na, what's my name" part when Drizzy came onstage to rap his opening verse on the song. After reciting his rhymes he sat down to watch her finish the rest of the tune. If you listen closely you can also hear an obnoxious dude in the crowd telling her to forget about Drake and come join him at the bar. "Forget that n--a, come over here," he screamed. This comes just weeks after a female Drake fan tattooed his name on her forehead.

Earlier this week, an image of an LA woman with no eyebrows and a huge Drake Tattoo inked across her forehead circulated twitter and the web with no real story behind what the h*ll the lady was thinking. Yes, it's clear that she's a massive Drake fan, but perhaps she took his line in the Rick Ross collab 'Free Spirit', 'Tat my name on you so I know it's real' a little too serious. (Necole Bitchie)

Jay-Z's Got $18,000 Problems, Sued By Workers Compensation Board

Rap mogul Jay-Z may be focused on his soon-to-arrive firstborn with wife Beyonce Knowles-Carter, however, but for now the Workers Compensation Board of New York has gotten his full attention, slammig the star with an $18,000 lawsuit.

Reports on the lawsuit hit the Internet Thursday (December 29) morning.

According to the suit, obtained by TMZ, Jay-Z failed to pay workers' compensation insurance for three months in 2009 -- and sources close to the situation tell us, the insurance was supposed to cover domestic employees in Jay-Z's house ... cooks, maids, drivers ... that sort of thing. The government agency sued the rapper to collect $18, 000 in fines for the transgression -- and a court has since ordered Jay to pay up. According to the docs, it was only a momentary lapse -- after the three-month period in 2009, Jay-Z acquired the right insurance and the problem was resolved ... with the exception of the outstanding $18, 000 owed. Despite the headline-garnering suit, Hov's camp claims the rapper is in the clear.

But according to a source close to the rapper, he never missed a payment -- the claim arose from an administrative error that was being resolved. Most US employers are required to supply workers' compensation insurance, which provides wage replacement and medical benefits to employees injured in the course of their work. (MyFox News)

A few years ago, Jay caught heat for allegedly neglecting to issue compensation to a few workers employed at his 40/40 Club.

In July of 2008, Judge Preska ruled that the club owners violated New York labor laws after reviewing the earning reports for various employees, who showed they were not paid for working over time. Almost 400 employees could be eligible to collect money should the 40/40 club eventually lose the lawsuit. (Examiner)

Outside of legal woes, the rapper reportedly spent this past Christmas with his wife and family.

Mom-to-be Beyonce is laying down the law this holiday by forbidding family members from turning on the television. The singer, who is expecting her first child with rapper husband Jay-Z, wants to enjoy quality time with her relatives, without any interruptions. She tells Britain's New! magazine, "I will be with family. Jay-Z and I are both so busy throughout the year that Christmas is just a time to relax with the family and count the many blessings in your life. Christmas Day is a no-TV zone. Less than one week after wrapping the Watch the Throne tour, Kanye West is back to work. The music mastermind debuted new material during his Christmas party in London last night. 'Ye worked the turntables while hosting the holiday bash at nightclub Le Baron London. According to attendees, he played beats from his next solo album and tracks from the upcoming G.O.O.D. Recently, former Cash Money Records producer Mannie Fresh said he was making a side hustle out of deejaying.

MMG's Pill Melts Down Over Label, "Artist Sign Deals, Label Doesn't Do Sh*t For Them"

Maybach Music Group's Pill is raising eyebrows Wednesday (December 28) night after publicly experiencing a Twitter meltdown over label woes.

Although he did not directly reference MMG boss Rick Ross or any specific person, Pill questioned the lack of label support he has received over the past few years.

"No TV and No Radio.. U do the math. I bet u can name you favorite artist and the turn on the tv and see the video and hear it on the radio. It's not rocket science. Radio and TV b4 I had a deal, none after and u ask why Pill ain't blew all the way up. Artist sign deals, label doesnt do shit for them or don't even know to work the artist. time wasted. Last week, the Atlanta rapper denied rumors suggesting he split ways with Ross' MMG.

Despite being the only artist of MMG -- besides latecomer Stalley -- without a radio single, Pill states that he was somewhat surprised to hear the whispers. "I'm not sure how they started actually," he tells The BoomBox. "I noticed it when people started f---ing with me on Twitter, but I don't know the source of it. I mean, it is what it is. Speculation on the Southern rapper's Maybach status hit the Internet earlier this month.

There is a nasty rumor going around about the (Former... allegedly) MMG rapper claiming he has been dropped from Rick Ross' MMG label. This comes somewhat expected since the rapper, who hails from Atlanta, has fallen into the the depths of MMG, being overshadowed by Meek Mill, newly signed Stalley, and the successful MMG debut, Ambition, by Wale. It's not all bad for Pill; he has kept himself busy touring and appearing with the group itself the last couple months. Perhaps this could be a marketing ploy to spark interest? Time will tell. Prodigy & Havoc Roll Deep W/ Indie Grinders, "You Get All Of This Commercial Music & You Hear It A Million Times A Day"

Mobb Deep's Prodigy and Havoc have offered their take on independent artists currently reaching new heights and making the major record labels finally take notice of their grind

 

Co-signing the indie game, Mobb Deep said commercial records have plagued quality music.

"Independent artists, we've definitely got love for them. We feel their pain, they gotta come up. Good luck to all of them," Prodigy said in an interview. Havoc follwed by saying, "I think independent artists are foundation to the music right now, because you get all of this commercial music and you hear it a million times a day. But independent artists are the real ones who are really expressing themselves. So those are the people you really have to look out for." (Muve Music)

West Coast rapper Nipsey Hussle recently credited indie hip-hop artist Mac Miller for inspiring him.

"You know Mac Miller he a cool cat and I had been conscious of what he was doing from a distance. But I was walking through the mall or something or the airport one day and I see a Billboard [magazine] [...] I see who's on the cover of the Billboard and it was Mac Miller, and me knowing him as being independent and not having a huge radio presence, that was big to me [...] when I saw that I twipic'd it and I put it on Twitter," Nipsey explained. "I just gave him his props on that and was just like 'That's big.' You know, it's a sign of the times that we living in and you know he hollered back. ... It was you know just kicking it and played some music and all that and was just talking about the industry and I was just telling him how I really respect what he's doing and it's motivation for an artist like myself that's doing it independent right now to see somebody even before he put out a No. 1 album he was... so I just wanted to give him his props on that... so he's cool and we hit it off and knocked a couple records out." Last month, Miller reacted to his Blue Slide Park being the first album to top the sales chart since Tha Dogg Pound's Dogg Food in 1995.

"It's crazy. I've been trying to take it all in," Miller said in an interview. "I've just been in constant motion, so I haven't gotten a chance to really stop and realize how crazy this is that we got the first #1 in 16 years. It's nuts, man. I never really got far enough to see an offer for real -- I got no hatred towards major labels or anything. I never got a chance to hear what they had to say. We just really wanted to stick with our home team and keep it in the family. [The major labels] called [Rostrum Records founder] Benjy and wanted to talk, but Benjy was just on some 'We're not trying to talk right now, we're doin' this independently.' Over the summer, Havoc told SOHH he was split over the major/indie debate.

"I'm all about getting into any situation that makes money, you understand what I'm saying," Hav told SOHH when asked if Mobb Deep is headed indie. "So I wouldn't just be like, 'Oh no, indie is this and major is that.' You can sign to an indie and it could wind up being structured like a major deal and you won't make any money, any way. Artists beware. People are quick to say, 'Oh yeah, I'm doing indie.' If the deal's not structured right, it could get structured just like a major and you won't see no f*cking bread. "If You Try To Trick Or Scare 50 Cent It's Over. We Don't Know What The Outcome Would Be"

Known for being a part of 50 Cent's G-Unit family and having his own radio show on Eminem's Shade 45, SOHH decided to previously reach out to DJ Whoo Kid and find out which rap star makes for a better boss.

While Whoo Kid is cool with Slim Shady, he credits a close relationship for giving Fif the edge.

"Who is a better boss? Eminem or 50 Cent? [laughs] I think 50 just because I'm interacting more with him. He's always advising me on anything that has to do with business, touring, music, he talks to me about everything, even family stuff," Whoo Kid told SOHH when asked if 50 Cent or Eminem is a better boss. "Eminem is super busy, you know what I'm saying? I usually do most of my interacting with Eminem when it's about a tour or radio or if we're on some real down time and all together." (SOHH)

Having gotten pranked by 50 in the past, Whoo Kid also said the Unit are smart enough not to retaliate against the general.

"50 and them are still [pranking] but I've been vigilant with it and watching my door, making sure my rooms are locked, check my underwear for any kind of spices or whatever it is that they're doing," Kid laughingly added. "I don't want garlic in my socks. ... Nobody [in G-Unit] is off limits when it comes to pranks. I think 50 is the only one probably because everyone is scared to trick him. He's just notorious because you can't really surprise him without him swinging. ... If you try to trick or scare him it's over. We don't know what the outcome would be. Big Sean Says That Common/Drake Beef's Cray, "There's A Lot Of Funny Sh*t Going On"

G.O.O.D. Music's Big Sean has offered his take on the current tension brewing between Drake and Common after the Chicago rap veteran subliminally went after Drizzy on his new "Sweet" record.

Having developed relationships with both artists, Sean admitted that the whole situation is bizarre.

"Ah man, that's crazy, man," Sean told DJ Whoo Kid when asked about Common dissing Drake. "[We were all cool,] that's what I thought. I don't know what's going on, man. Yeah man. [I'm shocked], definitely, man. There's a lot of funny sh*t going on but I just sit back. I'm glad I'm in the game, man and glad I'm a part of it all. I'm just going to continue to make success. A few days ago, Drizzy reportedly took aim at Common and taunted his record-selling ability.

Since Drake is "not a p*ssy" he figured he'd go ahead and respond, kinda. Just in case you can't read it, Drake subtweeted Common by saying "Platinum. Now THAT's Sweet!" Of course he's referring the song name and bragging on how many records he's sold in comparison to Common. Fair right? But then for some reason, Drake elected to take down the tweet. But that didn't stop the rest of twitter from weighing in on this supposed "beef" between two of the most non-threatening rappers the world has ever seen. (Loop 21)

Last week, Common confirmed speculation suggesting his "Sweet" is targeted toward artists like Drake.

Incarcerated rap groupie Kat Stacks continues to keep fans abreast of her ongoings via daily Twitter updates and has now promised to change her mischievous ways in favor of living a better life.

Stacks said realizing money cannot buy her freedom has given her a different perspective on life.

I regret watching her [videos] and saying on for three minutes, heairng her talk. She has to be the most ignorant person in the history of this sh*t they call hip-hop. Grammy-winning rapper Lil Wayne may have multiple baby mothers but his rumored new love interest, Dhea, was spotted next to the Young Money star at a recent Los Angeles Lakers basketball game.

Based on snapshots from the Sunday (December 25) game, Wayne and Dhea appear to still be a couple.

Lil Wayne and his girlfriend Dhea were sitting courtside as the Lakers fell to the Chicago Bulls 88-87 at the Staples Center in Los Angeles, CA. Big Sean Questions Ludacris 'Bada Boom' Tantrum, "It's A Year Later & He's Still Hanging Onto It"

G.O.O.D. Music's Big Sean has waved off Ludacris feud tensions weeks after the Disturbin' Tha Peace leader dropped his "Bada Boom" music video aimed at him and Young Money's Drake.

Talking to radio host DJ Whoo Kid, Big Sean questioned why Luda has just now decided to publicly lash out.

"For me, I'm from Detroit. So when it's real beef, beef ain't safe where I'm from. It's like real dangerous," Sean told Whoo Kid. "I never really considered it no type of beef. I really looked at it as free promotion for me. Especially from something I said over a year ago. I ain't really know people hang onto what other men say that much. ... If somebody says something bad about me, I'm like oh well. But then it's the fact that it's a year later and he's still hanging onto it -- but you know, it's all love. In November, Drake reportedly answered Luda's diss with a subliminal response.

Over the weekend, Drake broke his silence. Sort of. On Saturday (November 19), Drizzy took to Twitter in response to Big Sean's Twitter handle with a fittingly subliminal response to Luda's subliminal diss (the Atlanta rapper didn't name any names in his songs). 50 Cent Confirms T.I. Phone Convo, "When You Know Me To Back Down?"

After raising eyebrows by publicly scolding T.I. last month, G-Unit's 50 Cent has confirmed a phone conversation killed any possible beef and said they are on good terms.

 According to 50, they had a pow wow and came to a consesus.

"We have mutual friends and I was actually in conversation with one of them and they was around him so they left and I didn't tell them to get him on the phone and he didn't tell them to get me on the phone. It was just there. And it was like, 'Yo, you need to talk to him because you don't know where he's coming from.' ...
