Rapper Cory Gunz was arrested in the Bronx on Saturday for carrying a loaded firearm. The police detained Gunz yesterday afternoon around 2 p.m. and found the loaded gun in his backpack. Gunz is currently being held in Central Booking in the Bronx. He has no prior criminal record, but New York law mandates a prison sentence of three and a half years for illegal possession of a loaded weapon. (Rolling Stone)The rapper's father, Peter Gunz, has confirmed the arrest and offered more details.
"It was definitely an illegal search," Peter revealed. Gunz was unable to disclose full details on the incident just yet, but he explained the events leading up to his son's arrest. "I spoke to the arresting officer, and so far, what I'm hearing from him is that they got a phone call at the station saying they should 'look out,'" Gunz said. "According to [the officer], they didn't know he was Cory Gunz. They just saw a bunch of kids following him around. What I will say is that the officer that arrested Cory, actually happened to be a cool dude. After arresting Cory, sitting down with him and talking, he felt bad about the situation." (RapFix)Last year, actor/rapper Nick Cannon said Gunz is primed for superstardom.
"I definitely think he can [be the next Young Money superstar]," Cannon declared in an interview. "I think he can be bigger than Drake and Nicki Minaj. I'm a huge fan of both of those acts, but Cory comes from a different place. He's a street dude and he's been living hip-hop all his life and the industry's been buzzing about him for years. Jay-Z signed him when he was 17, so just the respect and the potential that everybody recognizes--and he holds the Bronx down like no other and that's the birthplace of hip-hop--so I think we can see a lot of things from this cat." (Rap-Up)In 2011, Gunz spoke on what lessons he has learned from Young Money boss Lil Wayne.
"All of his performances, whether it's a video or a live performance, his energy is always the same: It's always up," Gunz said in an interview referring to Lil Wayne. "If there's anything that I learned from him, it's definitely to put your heart in it. Regardless if you're writing a verse for somebody else's album, write it like it's for yours." (MTV)
