"There Was A Time Where If You Wasn't From The West Coast Nobody Gave A F*ck"

California rapper Mistah Fab recently shared his thoughts on why it was difficult for West Coast rappers to reclaim their spot at the top of hip-hop music.

According to Fab, the dominance West Coast artists experienced in the early 90's may play a role in their current obstacles.
"When the West Coast had it, n*ggas got so West-out people was like, "N*gga if we ever get the game from y'all we will never give it back." I honestly think that, bro. But there's some dope a** artists out here now. Like Kendrick Lamar, Nipsey Hussle even Kreayshawn is doing her pop hipster type stuff." (SOHH)
Mistah Fab also noted the shift in regional favor toward the end of the 90s
"You gotta think, there was a time where if you wasn't from the West Coast nobody gave a f*ck. Period. N*gga we had Dre, Snoop, Too Short, Ice Cube ... it was West Side. Do I even have to name Pac? Jay-Z went from saying, "There's too much West Coast d*ck ridin' to doing The Dynasty Album with a lot of West Coast production. It got crazy." (SOHH)
In late 2011, West Coast icon Dr. Dre discussed his plans to help mold the careers of Cali rappers Slim the Mobster and Kendrick Lamar.
"These are the next two artists I'm working on, Slim the Mobster and Kendrick Lamar. I think that's when I'm gonna just wrap it up for a minute because I've been working on music for 27 years now and the longest I've ever been out of the studio in 27 years has been two weeks," Dr. Dre said in an interview. "So yeah I feel like I'm gonna take a little bit of a break. I'm never gonna stop music, it's like air to me. So I'mma take a little bit of a break. Enjoy some time with the family til I get that itch to get back in." (FADER TV)
This past September, controversial Compton rapper Game gave fellow California rapper Tyler the Creator his stamp of approval.
"When you're on a song with Tyler you can say whatever the f*ck you want," Game said. "I always say what I want but I don't think I go as far as Tyler...I think he's like the West Coast Eminem. He don't give a f*ck. He just rhyme about whatever and it's like right out of an open book. I like him more than I like most new rappers. He don't really want anything other than just to rap."
