DJ Drama Says Don't Censor Him, "When It Comes To Mixtapes, There's Supposed To Be A Deejay Involved"

Atlanta's DJ Drama recently spoke out on rappers who use the services of deejays for underground efforts and said their decision to later put out deejay-free versions of their mixtapes strikes a nerve with him.

In Drama's perspective, the deejay's presence is as important as the artist's vocals when it comes to mixtapes.

"I'm still a believer that when it comes to mixtapes, there's supposed to be a deejay involved," Barack O'Drama said in an interview. "Truth be told, I'm not a fan of the no-deejay tapes after you've done the tape with the deejay. So for myself to still be wavin' a flag, it's important -- I'm totally for whoever, if you wanna put a project out without a deejay - and I get it, if you call it a mixtape - but I even heard [DJ] Kay Slay on the radio the other day [saying] 'Don't be scared, that's your album.' If you're not using a deejay, that's your album." (Bootleg Kev)

Recently, Memphis rapper Don Trip talked about the significance of linking with Drama for his new Guerilla mixtape.

"If you're a fan of hip-hop, period, the name DJ Drama and Gangsta Grillz means a lot to you. You're certified once you got that Gangsta Grillz album. Of course when you see a Gangsta Grillz album, it has all the prestige and Drama puts out tremendous work. The fact that I'm at a point in my career where I've worked with Drama, that was an accomplishment on my behalf. I went from hosting my own mixtapes to having DJ Drama on here. That's a good look." Not only able to helm hip-hop projects, Drama previously hooked up with R&B singer Teairra Mari for an underground joint.

"Actually, DJ Drama chose me. He said he was doing an R&B mixtape, he had just done one with Chris Brown," she explained in an interview. "He normally does hip-hop music. He was like, 'I want you to be the first female I use for my R&B mixtape.' So I agreed. DJ Drama does the biggest mixtapes. He charges people to do them. With this mixtape, first I did a remix to [Usher's] "Daddy's Home" and another one to Waka Flocka's [song 'O Let's Do It'], but I was like, I'm just gonna do newer stuff 'cause by the time the mixtape comes out that'll be kinda old. It's going to be remixes of songs that are out or maybe even throwback songs. I might do some old-school R&B songs. There's no title yet. I've been contemplating a few titles in my head. We'll be working on this ASAP, probably in the next three to four weeks." (Rap-Up)

G-Unit leader 50 Cent recently announced plans to put out his Drama-hosted mixtape in the near future.

"I'm dropping another mix tape called the lost tape with DJ drama My first gangsta grillz mix tape.," Fif tweeted out March 28th.
