No Limit Records' Silkk the Shocker has offered his take on former labelmate Mystikal making Cash Money his new home despite a past rift between Master P and Birdman.
Happy for Mystikal, Sillk said the signing did not strike him as a shocker.
"I just think, man, at the end of the day do what's best for you. And do what's best for your career, do what's best for your life. And if he thought that was it, then that's it. The decision is about yourself. And actually, I think Cash Money [Records] is doing they thing," Silkk said in an interview. "I wish [Mystikal] well, because he is a cool guy and I got a lot of respect and love for him. I know he made the best decision for himself and so I don't have no problem with it." (HHDX)
Silk also said he did not think twice about Mystikal's move despite past tensions between No Limit's Master P and Cash Money's Birdman.
"Yeah. I never thought it was a problem. I'm on [Master] P's side and he never explained [how his beef with Birdman started]. I'm sure he maybe had like a few words about [Birdman] ... but they grew up together, so I don't know how that [relationship between them] was. But as far as the artists on the labels amongst each other, I don't think it ever was a problem," Silk added. "I liked what Cash Money was doing. I always thought everybody was talented. I think people got caught up into the fact that we're from the same city. But I gave everybody props and respect. If any brother is getting they money and making it happen, then that's what it is." According to reports, Mystikal engaged in numerous feuds with Cash Money at the start of his career.
Mystikal's debut album, Mystikal, was released on New Orleans-based independent record label Big Boy Records in 1994. He found himself in conflict with fellow New Orleans rappers signed to Cash Money Records including U.N.L.V., Lil Wayne and B.G.. They dissed him on tracks like "Drag 'Em in Tha River" by U.N.L.V. and "F*ck Big Boy" by The B.G.'z. He struck back with the diss "Beware" which was on his sophomore effort Mind of Mystikal. Mystikal's sister, Michelle Tyler, who sang the chorus on "Not That N*gga" songs "Dedicated To Michelle Tyler", "Murderer", "Murder 2", "Shine" and "Murder III" on the Mind of Mystikal, Unpredictable and Let's Get Ready albums, respectively, refer to Mystikal's sister's murder. Around mid-March, the rapper talked about what fans could expect from his Cash Money debut.
"I'm telling you, this album is gonna be so well worth the wait, Sway, believe that," Mystikal told MTV News' Sway Calloway. The truth is, even if it wasn't "worth the wait," would a rapper really say otherwise? Mystikal acknowledged that his boasts may seem cliché, but that "those who know who I am know that I mean that." On Original, fans can expect even more collaborations from Cash Money/Young Money artists. "Busta [Rhymes] was one of the first artists I worked with when I first came home," he said. "Busta came out there, came all the way to Baton Rouge. I'm talking about we got it in." What about Drake? "No, that's coming," Mystikal promised. (MTV)
Outside of being featured on his "Original" record, the New Orleans emcee recently credited Birdman and Lil Wayne for saving his career.
"My head is still spinning right now," Mystikal said when asked about adjusting to the new label situation. "It's humbling. It's really humbling to be looking from this position, the six years [behind bars], looking up at everything. That's at the bottom of the barrel. The only thing that's worse than being in prison is probably death itself. So to do that for six years and then to come home and be on top with the top record label in the world? It's humbling. ... That was nothing but God that allowed this situation to unfold like this -- they didn't save my career, they saved my life. Literally. So that's how serious I am." (Hip Hop Nation)
Mystikal was signed to No Limit Records from 1997 to 1999.
