According to reports, O'Neal died at a hospital following a mid-October stroke.
Patrice O'Neal, a stand-up comedian who boisterously took on controversial topics like race, AIDS and his own struggle with diabetes, died on Tuesday. He was 41 and lived in New Jersey. He died in a hospital in the New York City area from complications of a stroke he suffered on Oct. 19, his agent, Matt Frost, said. (New York Times)The 300-pound stand-up comedian's stroke is believed to have been in relation to his weight.
O'Neal had reportedly suffered from diabetes, which is a significant risk factor for stroke, according to the National Stroke Assn. Other risk factors include obesity, atrial fibrillation and high blood pressure -- which, according to the association, "is one of the most common causes of stroke because it puts unnecessary stress on blood vessel walls, causing them to thicken and deteriorate." When that happens, "cholesterol or other fat-like substances may break off of artery walls and block a brain artery." (Los Angeles Times)His unexpected passing caught the attention of various entertainers who gave their reactions.
