Asher Roth signs to Def Jam and announced a retail mixtape release date, as Ace Hood plans a mix of his own, while Peedi Crakk gets a date and some of our favorites still have none.
Last week, Ludacris dropped his highly anticipated "1.21 Gigawatts: Back to the First Time" mixtape (check out the review), which had all ears on Luda once again. The Southern fried emcee boasted some crazy collabs with the likes of Rick Ross on the Drumma Boy-produced "Do Sumthin Strange," along with Wiz Khalifa on the Big K.R.I.T.-produced "What U Smoking On" (K.R.I.T.'s also on "I'm On Fire"), Gucci Mane on "Shake N Fries," and a few others. Two songs jumped out at everyone: "Badaboom" and "Say It To My Face" with Meek Mill (produced by Juicy J). The reason? Both are rumored to be diss tracks, mainly "Badaboom" which is supposedly pointed toward Drake and Big Sean. The controversy is over stolen flows and biting styles. Who knew Luda would take it back a few decades and get live on a mixtape?
This week lacks the controversy of last, but there are still some mixtapes waiting to be heard as Thanksgiving arrives. Today Termanology & Ea$y drop the "S.T.R.E.E.T." mixtape. We got a little taste of this one a few weeks ago with the Lee Bannon produced "Compared to You" and then again with "All My Girls" featuring Fred the Godson and Lee Wilson (also produced by Lee Bannon). There's more good music on "S.T.R.E.E.T." where that came from for sure.
On the 23rd, OJ Da Juiceman is still in schedule for "Lord Of the Rings." That tape has been pushed around more than Detox, so who knows if this date will stick. On Black Friday, however, there are a few gems: DJ Smallz gets Luda hosting "Southern Smoke Radio 7" and Kevin Cossom for "Southern Smoke Radio R&B 7" along with Peedi Crakk's "Crakk Files 4." So while you're eating leftovers, definitely bump those. On November 30th, JR Writer comes through with "SS3." JR was dropping a few tracks over the summer shouting this mixtape out, and now it's finally coming.
Fresh off a Def Jam signing announcement, Asher Roth also comes with a date for "Pabst & Jazz." That date is December 21st and in true record label fashion, this mixtape will go to retail. That's right, four days before Christmas you can jump on iTunes and get Asher's tracks like the Blended Babies-produced "Common Knowledge" and other cuts from the original college rap star.
In the world of limbo, Ace Hood will be dropping "The Statement 2." Ace got Rick Ross on the misspelled "Realist Livin." Speaking of Rick Ross, we're still waiting for a date on that "Y.O.L.O." mixtape alongside Drake. Now that Rawse's album is pushed back, they'd better hurry with that YOLO. Guess who's back? Cassidy. He's coming along with "I Get It In 3" and already dropped a somewhat title track "I Get It In" and another "Guess Who's Back." Also, add B.o.B.'s "E.P.I.C." and Wiz Khalifa's "Taylor Allderdice" to the wait bank as well. Looks like what the mixtape world is lacking in solid release dates, they're making up for in acronyms.
